For Your Eyes Only...

In the last few days, the cases of eye flu or conjunctivitis are on the rise .this is partly due to the extended and heavy monsoon that we have had in this season .Due to the heat and high humidity levels, the bacteria and viruses get a very conducive environment to flourish. children are more vulnerable due to low immunity levels and also because they are more likely to touch each other while playing and in classrooms. Both the viral and the bacterial forms of conjunctivitis are highly contagious and spread very quickly. It is often seen that if one person in a family contracts it, it is quickly passed on the other members and even friends and neighbours.

What is it?

Conjunctivitis means the inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the transparent membrane lining the eyelid and a part of the ball of the eye. This inflammation happens because of the infection caused by any of the viruses or bacteria that can enter the eye. The infections usually start in one eye and rapidly spread to the other.

Symptoms:

The common symptoms are redness in the eye, watery or thick purulent discharge.irritation or itching in the eye,a felling in the eye as if there is some foreign body present in the eye.The redness of the eye that is seen in this disease has also given the name 'pink eye' to it.The thick pus like discharge is seen in cases of bacterial conjunctivitis whereas in cases of viral conjunctivitis, the discharge is thin and watery. The eyes may become sticky, more so after a night's sleep and one may find it difficult to open the eyes in the morning. The disease can remain contagious even two weeks after the signs and symptoms have started ie. even after the infected person has recovered completely.

Precautions to take:

Shaking hands, sharing towels or handkerchiefs can cause the infection to spread. Also, the infection can spread through coughing or sneezing. Therefore it is important that one does not shake hands with anyone who is suffering from the infection or is just recovering from about of the flu. At the same time, washing hands frequently and not rubbing or touching the eyes also jelps in containing the infection .

Homeopathy at help:

Homeopathy offers a very good option of treatment for eye flu. There are medicines that can help prevent a person from catching this disease if taken beforehand. Homeopathic medicines like argentums nitricum ,euphrasia, alliumcepa, pulsatilla and silicea are the mainstay of the treatment but one has to go into the details of the symptoms to prescribe a particular medicine and also the correct dosage. Do not take any medicine without consulting a homeopath.
